Overview
Symptoms of Paget's disease of the breast include itching, redness, thickened skin, and ulceration of the nipple.
History and symptoms
A detailed history documenting the length of time the lesion along with any associated symptoms should be taken. Symptoms of Paget's disease of the breast usually occur in one breast but can present bilaterally[1]. Some patients have two or more or a combination of the below symptoms at presentation, they can also be asymptomatic.[2] Symptoms of Paget's disease of the breast include:[3][4]
- Puritis, tingling, or redness in the nipple and/or areola
- Flaking, crusty, or thickened skin on or around the nipple
- Erosion or ulceration of the nipple
- A flattened or inverted nipple
- Discharge from the nipple that may be yellowish or bloody
- A palpable breast mass is present in 50% of patients.
- Underlying breast cancer is present in 85%- 88% of cases.
