Overview

Abdominal CT is the diagnostic study of choice for suspected volvulus. Findings with CT include a whirl pattern denoting a dilated colon segment and a bird beak appearance of the afferent and efferent segment of colonic segments.

Diagnostic Study of Choice

Gold standard/Study of choice:

  • Abdominal CT is the gold standard test for the diagnosis of volvulus.[1][2]
  • The following result of abdominal CT is confirmatory of volvulus:
    • Whirl pattern signifying a dilated colon
    • Bird beak appearance of afferent and efferent colonic segments
  • The abdominal CT should be performed when:
    • The patient presented with symptoms of abdominal pain, distension, constipation/obstipation and nausea.

Sequence of Diagnostic Studies

The abdominal CT should be performed when:

  • The patient presented with symptoms of abdominal pain, abdominal distension, nausea and constipation.
  • This is also done to rule out other causes of intestinal obstruction and abdominal pain.

Diagnostic Criteria

  • Volvulus is mainly diagnosed based on clinical presentation.
  • There are no established criteria for the diagnosis of volvulus.
