Other Diagnostic Studies
Electrophysiologic study (EPS)
- An electrophysiologic study (EPS) is used as a diagnostic tool in patients presenting with palpitations associated with serious symptoms such as syncope or presyncope.
- It is often used when other studies have proven to be nondiagnostic.
- Advantages of EPS include:
- It helps identify the mechanism of the underlying arrythmia. [1]
- It has the potential to be both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. [2]
- Unlike ambulatory ECG monitoring, it does not cause the patient to wait for another episode, thereby decreasing the risk of the patient experiencing deleterious symptoms.
