Overview
Many times, the person experiencing palpitations may not be aware of anything apart from the abnormal heart rhythm itself. But palpitations can be associated with other things such as tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, dizziness or lightheadedness. Depending on the type of rhythm problem, these symptoms may be just momentary or more prolonged. Actual blackouts or near blackouts, associated with palpitations, should be taken seriously because they often indicate the presence of important underlying heart disease.
History and Symptoms
Following history has to be elicited in a patient presenting with complaints of palpitations:
- Feeling of skipped or stopped beats
- Whether the heart rate feels slow or fast?
- Feeling of a racing, pounding, or fluttering
- Is there a regular or irregular pattern to the unusual heartbeat sensations?
- Did the palpitations begin or end suddenly?
- Timing of occurrence palpitations
- Occurrence in response to reminders of a traumatic event.
- Lying down or resting?
- Relationship of with the change of body position?
- History of associated symptoms like
