Differentiating mumps from other diseases
Mumps must be differentiated from other diseases that cause prodromal symptoms, swelling of salivary glands, particularly parotitis, orchitis or oophoritis/mastitis, encephalitis, and meningitis.
Causes of salivary gland swelling
EBV, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, enterovirus, HHV-6, and parvovirus B19 infections
