Overview
Gestational diabetes refers to hyperglycemia during second or third trimester of pregnancy.[1]
Classification
Gestational diabetes was referred to any type of hyperglycemia that was not recognized or was not present prior pregnancy but now it has been changed because of increased number of type 2 diabetes and obese woman that became pregnant and are unaware of their glycemic status.
ADA classification
Diagnosis of diabetes in the second or third trimester of pregnancy that is not clearly either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.[1]
White's classification
White classified diabetes in pregnancy in to two groups:[2]
- Type A1: Controlled by diet and exercise
- Type A2: Requires insulin for treatment
