Overview
The cause of Paget's disease of the breast has not been identified. There are two widely excepted hypothesis:
- The most widely accepted theory is that the disease results from an underlying intra-ductal breast carcinoma. The cancer cells are hypothesized to travel through lactiferous ducts to the nipple and its surrounding skin.
- Another theory is that the disease can develop independently in the nipple as an in-situ carcinoma.
