Overview
Blind loop syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when the intestine is obstructed, slowing or stopping the progress of digested food, and thus facilitating the growth of bacteria to the point that problems in nutrient absorption occur.
The treatment includes both medical and surgical therapy.
Medical Therapy
Pharmacotherapy
The treatment generally depends upon the cause of the blind loop syndrome.
- Patients need to be resuscitated , whenever there is malnutrition.
- The initial pharmacotherapy is with antibiotics- especially Rifaximin , neomycin for 14 days.
- Vit B12 supplementation
- Sometimes, blind loop cannot be reversed completely, in these cases, treatment is focused on correcting nutritional deficiencies and eliminating bacterial overgrowth by treating with antibiotics.
