Overview

Causes of Patent ductus arteriosus is not known. However, increased incidence have been associated with mother's rubella and genetic causes

Causes

• Genetic factors - It has been found to occur with increased frequencies in some families, indicating some association with autosomal dominant inheritence . The exact gene location for patent ductus arteriosus has not yet been determined.
• Congenital rubella (associated with PDA and pulmonary artery stenosis)
• Fetal alcohol syndrome
• Maternal drug use
  • Amphetamine
  • Phenytoin
