Overview
There are a variety of factors that contribute to anoxic brain injury. The primary mechanism for injury is a result of a lack of oxygen to the brain.

- Cardiovascular disease (Acute coronary syndromes, cardiomyopathy)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Central nervous system diseases (e.g. cerebrovascular accident)
- Thromboembolic disorders (e.g. pulmonary emboli)
- Drug /substance overdose, poisoning
- Infections (sepsis, pneumonia)
- Volume loss (Hypovolemia: e.g. hemorrhage, dehydration)
