Epidemiology and Demographics
- Estimated prevalence of WPW syndrome is 100 - 300 per 100,000 people in the entire world.
- Prevalence increases in first degree relatives in which it can get as high as 500-600 per 100,000 people.
- May be underdiagnosed given the presence of left sided APs which may be silent during NSR.
- The incidence of tachyarrhythmias in patients with WPW has been estimated to be somewhere between 12% and 80%.
The incidence of tachyarrythmias is not well established in patients who present WPW pattern.
- The incidence of sudden cardiac death in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern is not high. A metaanalysis involving twenty studies estimated that the sudden cardiac death in patients with asymptomatic preexcitations was around 1.3 per 1000 patient-years. Neveertheleess, it has been estimated to be 4.5 per 1000 patients-years in one recent series.
