Overview
Rheumatic fever is usually caused by an infection with Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes.
Causes for rheumatic fever
- Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes throat infection usually precedes development of rheumatic fever[1].
- Certain strains of group A streptococcus such as emm type 12 which are known to cause rheumatic fever[2].
- Scarlet fever though rare, can cause rheumatic fever.
- Positive family history of rheumatic fever associated with autosomal recessive gene pattern of inheritance has been observed in several studies to increase the susceptibility of developing rheumatic fever[3][2].
