Overview
Common complications of glioblastoma include herniation, systemic illness, brainstem invasion by tumor, neutron-induced cerebral injury, weakness, fatigue, numbness, surgical complications, and coma.[1]
Complications
Common complications of glioblastoma include:[1]
- Herniation (axial, transtentorial, subfalcine, tonsillar)
- Systemic illness
- Brainstem invasion by tumor
- Neutron-induced cerebral injury
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Numbness
- Surgical complications (cerebral hemorrhage, edema)
- Coma
Prognosis
- Prognosis is generally poor, and the 5-year survival rate of patients with glioblastoma is less than 10%.
- Negative prognostic factors include:[2]
- With standard treatment (surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy), the median survival is approximately 14 months.[3] Increasing age (> 60 years) carries a worse prognosis.
