EBV-associated antibodies may be helpful for secondary prevention of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Secondary Prevention
EBV-associated antibodies may be helpful for secondary prevention of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Follow up after treatment
After treatment, patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma should follow up for prevention of second malignancy. Follow up includes:
- Physical exam
- Every 1-3 months for 1st year after treatment
- Every 2-6 months for 2nd year after treatment
- Every 4-8 months for 3-5 years after treatment
- Every year after 5 years
- Nasendoscopy
Scanning
- CT Scan
- MRI
Scans are performed at routine intervals as follows:
- Baseline scanning is done in 3-6 months after treatment, further scans are scheduled based on finding of physical exam and symptoms experienced by the patient
- Scanning for asymptomatic patients is not encouraged
Thyroid hormone testing
Thyroid stimulating hormone testing every 12 months if neck is exposed to radiation therapy
Dental screening
Only implicated if oral cavity is exposed to radiations
