Overview
Head and neck MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors. Findings on head and neck MRI suggestive of salivary gland tumors include soft tissue infiltration, perineural invasion, and intracranial extention.[1]
MRI
MRI assess tumors located in deep tissue, such as the deep lobe of the parotid gland and minor salivary glands. It provides information on the size of the tumor and if it has spread to the nerves or the other tissues nearby. MRI finds out if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body.[1] MRI is also useful to evaluate perineural, local, and bony invasion and lymph node metastases. It also assesses the parapharyngeal space for involvement from lesions in the parotid.[2][3]Given the high risk for malignant disease mri is suggested in evaluation of all sublingual gland tumors. MRI permits more detailed evaluation of soft tissue infiltration, perineural invasion, and intracranial extension[4] Parotid adenocarcinoma.jpg|MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Axial T1 pleomorphic adenoma.jpg |MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Axial T2 pleomorphic adenoma.jpg |MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Coronal T1 pleomorphic adenoma MRI.jpg|MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Parotid adenocarcinoma.jpg|MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Axial T1 pleomorphic adenoma.jpg |MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Axial T2 pleomorphic adenoma.jpg |MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5] Coronal T1 pleomorphic adenoma MRI.jpg|MRI showing parotid adenocarcinoma[5]
