Volvulus and its treatment were established in the 20th century.

Historical Perspective

  • The history of volvulus began with the description of the suspensary muscle anchoring the duodenal-jejunal junction in the left upper quadrant by anatomist Václav Treitz in the 19th century.
  • The potential for volvulus and its treatment were established by paediatric surgeon, William Ladd in the 20th century.[1]
