The two vascular complications, venous and arterial thrombosis, share many risk factors such as:

- Metabolic syndrome.
Furthermore there are many diseases that causes both arterial and venous thrombosis, such as:
- Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome,
- Hyperhomocysteinemia,
- Malignancies,
- Infections,
- Hormonal treatment.
