Overview
Differentiating acute megakaryoblastic leukemia from other Diseases
Distinguishing features from other subtypes of AML are following:
- Thrombocytopenia is more common and severe in AMKL compared with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Blast cells in the bone marrow are <30% in MDS versus >30% in AMKL.[1]
- Presence of megakaryocytic specific antigens (CD41, CD61)[2] and markers (glycoprotein 1b) and platelets peroxidase activity. Karyotype analysis also helpful due to its complex and unusual karyotypic presentation (t(1;22)(p13;q13).[3][4]
Differential Diagnoses:[5]
Acute myeloid leukemia otherwise not specified as per WHO classification:
- Acute myeloid leukemia with minimal differentiation
- Acute myeloid leukemia without maturation
- Acute myeloid leukemia with maturation
- Acute myelomonocytic leukemia
- Acute monoblastic/monocytic leukemia
- Acute erythroid leukemia
- Pure erythroid leukemia
- Erythroleukemia, erythroid/myeloid
- Acute basophilic leukemia
- Acute panmyelosis with myelofibrosis (a.k.a acute myelofibrosis)
