Overview
Mast cell leukemia may be classified into two categories based on prognosis(leukemic and aleukemic).[1] Based on the duration of symptoms, mast cell leukemia may be classified into either acute or chronic.[2]
Classification
- In 2016 the World Health Organization (WHO) changed classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues.[3]
- In the current classification mastocytosis is a major category. In the last classification mastocytosis was subtype of major category (myeloproliferative neoplasms).[3]
- Indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM)
- Smoldering systemic mastocytosis (SSM)
- Systemic mastocytosis with an associated hematological neoplasm (SM-AHN)
- Aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM)
- Mast cell leukaemia (MCL)
- Leukemic variant
- Circulating mast cells ≥ 10%
- Bone marrow mast cells ≥ 20%
- Aleukemic variant
- Circulating mast cells < 10%
