Causes
Prostatitis may be caused by bacteria. Aerobic gram-negative bacilli are the most common cause of bacterial prostatitis, with E.coli accounting for 50-80% of cases.[1] The cause of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is unknown.[2] Infectious causes of prostatitis include:[1]
- Escherichia coli
- Enterobacteriaceae (Klebsiella, Proteus)
- Enterococci
- Pseudomonas species
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
