Overview
Prostatitis is usually caused by bacterial infection. Aerobic gram-negative bacilli are the most common cause of bacterial prostatitis, with Escherichia coli accounting for 50-80% of cases.[1] The cause of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is unknown.[2][1][1][2]
Causes
Common Causes
- Escherichia coli
- Enterobacteriaceae (Klebsiella, Proteus)
- Enterococci
- Pseudomonas species
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Causes of Acute Prostatitis
Causes of Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis
The causes associated with Chronic bacterial prostatitis include [3][4][5]
- Escherichia coli (up to 80% cases)[6]
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Enterococcus faecalis
- Proteus mirabilis
