Overview
Mast cell leukemia may be classified into two categories based on prognosis (leukemic and aleukemic).[1] Based on the duration of symptoms, mast cell leukemia may be classified into either acute or chronic.[2]
Classification
- In 2016 the World Health Organization (WHO) changed classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues.[3]
- Mastocytosi was removed as one of the subtypes under the major category of "myeloproliferative neoplasms" and is classified as its own major category
- Mast cell leukemia may be classified into two categories based on prognosis:[1]
- Leukemic variant
- Circulating mast cells ≥ 10%
- Bone marrow mast cells ≥ 20%
- Aleukemic variant
- Circulating mast cells < 10%
- Based on the duration of symptoms, mast cell leukemia may be classified into:[2]
- Acute mast cell leukemia
- Chronic mast cell leukemia
