Overview
Common risk factors in the development of small intestine cancer are Crohn's disease, celiac disease, radiation exposure, hereditary cancer syndromes, smoking, and alcohol.
Risk Factors
- There are no established risk factors for small intestinal cancers.
- Crohn disease is considered to be the most important risk factor of small intestinal cancers.[1]
- Other associated risk factors are: [2] [3]
- Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP)
- Lynch syndrome
- Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
- Celiac disease
- Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
- Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal neoplasms
- Radiation exposure
- Hereditary cancer syndromes: familial adenomatous polyposis, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, MUTYH-associated polyposis
- Smoking and alcohol use increases the risk of small intestine cancer
- Colon cancer-Survivors of colon cancer have an increased risk of getting cancer of the small intestine
