Overview
Lymphangitis is an inflammation of the lymphatic channels following infectious causes like bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites with streptococcus pyogenes being the most common cause. It can also occur in the setting of noninfectious causes like congenital or development abnormalities, surgical procedures, malignancy, radiation, and trauma.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated. Lymphangitis most often is a sign of a worsening skin infection and the causative organism spreading into the blood and thus must be treated as such irrespective of the causes.
