Overview
There is no routinely diagnositic studies for atopic dermatitis, but in selected patients to rule out other skin conditions, histology examination of a skin biopsy and other laboratory tests (eg, serum immunoglobulin E, potassium hydroxide preparation, patch testing, genetic testing) can be considered

There is no routinely diagnositic studies for atopic dermatitis, but in selected patients to rule out other skin conditions, histology examination of a skin biopsy and other laboratory tests can be considered.[1]
- Serum IgE level
- Scraping - for tinea corporis
- Tzanck smear and swab for viral polymerase chain reaction - eczema herpeticum
- Swab, gram stain and antibiotic sensitivity - staphylococcus aureus
- Complete blood cell count
- Thrombocytopenia (Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Peripheral eosinophilia
- Potassium hydroxide (KOH)- dermatophytes
