Overview
There is no established criteria for the diagnosis of amenorrhea. However, the diagnosis of amenorrhea is based on delayed or absent menstrual cycle.

- However, the diagnosis of amenorrhea is based on delayed or absent menstrual cycle.
Primary amenorrhea
- Absence of menarche until 15 years of age, in the presence of other secondary sexual characteristics.
- Absence of menarche after 5 years of thelarche, if thelarche occurred before 10 years of age.[1]
Secondary amenorrhea
- Menstrual cycle is interrupted for at least 3 months, however were regular before.[2]
- Menstrual cycle is interrupted for at least 6 months, however were irregular before.[3]
Functional (hypothalamic) amenorrhea
- The patient usually reports normal regular cycles in the past, with sudden interruption in menstrual cycles for more than 3 months.
- There is almost always a history of weight loss (severe), excessive exercise, or drastic emotional stress prior to cessation of menstruation.[4]
