Surgery is not the treatment of choice in most types of stomatitis. Most cases resolve with removal of the inciting event like cigarette smoking or denture fixation or oral hygienic measures. Medical therapy is used for the infectious causes or incase of severe pain. Surgery is not preferred unless there is a suspicion for an oral tumor or a biopsy is required for the diagnosis of the exact type of stomatitis.

Noma or Gangrenous stomatitis
Surgery may be require in Noma in the following conditions[1]
- Removal of the teeth that are loose
- Surgery for cosmetic reasons
Trench mouth
- Surgical debridement[2]
