Overview
Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone must be differentiated from Cerebral salt wasting , Adrenal insufficiency, Hypopituitarism, Hypothyroidism,Psychogenic polydipsia
Differentiating Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone from other Diseases
Hyponatremia is observed in elderly patients, associated with exaggerated response of ADH release and attenuated response of renin aldosterone system. Differentiation of SIADH and hyponatremia other than SIADh is essential in anticipating the therapeutic effect of water restriction to correct the disorder. [1]
- Cerebral salt wasting syndrome also presents with hyponatremia, but is treated differently.
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis
- Hyperglycemia
- Pseudohyponatremia
- Psychogenic polydipsia
- Hypopituitarism
- Hypothyroidism or myxedema coma
