Overview
Various pathogens including Herpes virus, lack of oral hygiene and nutritional deficiencies can cause stomatitis along with many other causes. A detailed insight on the various causes of stomatitis has been described.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
Common Causes
The common causes of stomatitis include:[1][2][3]
- Dehydration
- Dentures
- Folate deficiency
- Herpes
- Oropharyngeal candidiasis
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
- Drugs
HIV
The following pathogens can cause stomatitis in HIV:[4]
- Mycobacterium avium intracellulare
- Helicobacter pylori
- Leishmania
- Amoeba
- HSV
- CMV
- Interferon
- Foscarnet
- Histoplasma
- Cryptococcus
Necrotizing ulcerative stomatitis or Stomatitis gangrenosa or NOMA
Following are a few causes of gangrenous stomatitis[5][6]
Trench mouth or Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis
- Treponema[7]
- Prevotella intermedia[8]
Bovine papular stomatitis
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease
Candidal Stomatitis
Nicotinic stomatitis
- Smoking with a pipe[12]
Contact stomatitis
