PR domain zinc finger protein 1 also known as BLIMP-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PRDM1 gene.[1][2] BLIMP-1 acts as a repressor of beta-interferon (β-IFN) gene expression. The protein binds specifically to the PRDI (positive regulatory domain I element) of the β-IFN gene promoter. Transcription of this gene increases upon virus induction.[2]
Function
The increased expression of the Blimp-1 protein in B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, NK cell and other immune system cells leads to an immune response through proliferation and differentiation of antibody secreting plasma cells.
